The Institute of Energy – National Research Institute (IEN-PIB) is one of the largest institutes conducting research in the field of energy technologies. It is a modern research and implementation center subordinated to the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

IEN-PIB is active in many areas for energy transformation, paying particular attention to energy security. An example of these activities is active participation in the creation of the Polish Hydrogen Strategy and the Polish Hydrogen Agreement and being a member of most of the created hydrogen valleys. IEN-PIB also has competence centers, including the Hydrogen Technology Center, which is the largest of them and is responsible for the development of electrolyzers and fuel cells. The center brings together 56 experts in hydrogen technologies and related systems and processes.

As of December 31, 2023, IEN-PIB’s key successes include the construction of a modular rSOC (reversible Solid Oxide Cell) installation integrated with the existing bleed steam installation at EC Elbląg as part of the HYDROGIN project run by the Research and Development Center. M. Faraday (Orlen Group) and the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of ScIENces. This is the world’s first bidirectional hydrogen production installation of this type, combined with a heat and power plant, the leading contractor of which is the CPE IEN-PIB Plant. Another achievement is the construction and commissioning of a 30 kW SOE electrolyzer by IEN-PIB as part of the VETNI project conducted by PKN ORLEN. The electrolyzer is located at the Jasło refinery.
